You know the Grill — Tips On Grilling a Beautiful Burger

  • When using regular ground beef, an 80% meat and 20% fat content is best — using less fat content (90% lean) will keep your burger from being its juiciest.
  • When using a rub, add a little oil or water to make a wet rub — it sticks better to the meat.
  • Use a marinade with sweet ingredients to create a nice caramelized coating on your meat when grilled.
  • Always refrigerate meat when marinating and discard marinade afterward — a grilling drill to live by.
  • Always apply a thin coating of oil to the hot grill grates with a paper or cloth towel to prevent your burgers from sticking.
  • Wait until the grill is at its hottest before placing your burger on and then let it sit for 3-5 minutes before moving. If it tears? The grill wasn’t hot enough.
  • Don’t salt your burgers before cooking. Salt draws out moisture and can create a dry burger (rubs are an exception).
  • To create the perfect hatch marks (diamonds), simply place your burger at the 10 o'clock position, wait a few minutes (do not touch), then turn that same end to the 2 o'clock position and wait a few more minutes. Now flip the burger and repeat on the other side. Voila!
  • Turn up your patience and turn over your burger only one time - this is all it needs.
  • Cook all burgers (beef, poultry, fish, etc.) to an internal temperature of 170ºF, according to a meat thermometer.
  • Get creative with the toppings and sides. Vegetables, potatoes, even fruit, are amazing on the grill.
