Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with Market District!

National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 to October 15 in the United States. During this period, we honor the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. Note:

• “Hispanic” refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a Spanish-speaking country.

• “Latino/a or Latinx” refers to a person who is from, or a descendant of someone who is from, a country in Latin America.

That said, this period is an excellent time to bring to the forefront all of the amazing Hispanic and Latin American foods that we celebrate every day with great reverence for the magnificent foods and flavors! Here are just a few of the products we adore.


Tia Lupita Sauces

Hector Saldivar’s mother was known affectionately as Tia Lupita ("Aunt Lupita" in Spanish). She always filled the family kitchen with the love, laughs and delicious foods. In Mexico, family recipes are valuable heirlooms carefully handed down from generation to generation. Tia perfected her family hot sauce to create a delightful balance of heat and flavor, coveted by anyone lucky enough to get a taste.

When Hector moved to San Francisco, Tia would ship him bottles to make certain he always had a taste of home. Hector shared these, and soon friends came knocking, looking for the next delivery. Too good to keep to himself, Hector asked for his mother's blessing to bottle the sauce for all to enjoy.

Named Tia Lupita to honor his mom and the legacy of the family recipe, the label bears Tia's likeness, paying homage to her trademark: wearing a curler on her head while she cooks to keep her bangs out of her eyes! We carry her Hot Sauce, her Chipotle Sauce and her Salsa Verde!

Siete actually has a really cool story that positions them as leaders in the grain-free, gluten-free, paleo, heritage inspired food world. Yes, that world. In response to a sister, Veronica, who was diagnosed with a series of auto-immune complications, they began making their favorite Tex-Mex foods suitable to maintaining a low-inflammation, grain-free diet — a diet that all seven siblings adopted.

Tucson Tamale—A Mexican Tradition!

Sherry Martin grew up in a loving, loud and large Mexican-American family that for years, handed down the family tamale recipe and tamalada (tamale-making party) tradition. According to Sherry, making tamales is a labor of love. There is always laughter, teasing, storytelling, kids running around — and, of course, lots of tamales!

Todd’s first tamale-making experience was in Sherry’s family home with 5 bushels of corn, 25 pounds of freshly roasted green chilies, 18 friends and family and 5 cases of beer. He was already in love with Sherry, and now, he was in love with making tamales.

In early 2008, Todd left his Fortune 500 job to help Sherry found Tucson Tamale, with an eye on healthier and cleaner ingredients.
